Since the strong buy I initiated in Feb 2024, VFC has achieved the following as of 15 September:

New management team with inflow of talented leadership. Sun Choe (former Chief Product Officer of Lululemon) is now leading Vans, and the ex-CFO of Spotify, Paul Vogel, joining as the CFO. Sun Choe’s achievements at Lululemon is undisputed and here’s an article on why Sun Choe is a great fit for Vans.

Deleveraging of the balance sheet through the $1.5 billion sale of Supreme (which really caught investors off-guard here). This, coupled with their guided operating cash flow, allows them to pay down their next three upcoming maturities, giving them a clear operating runway till 2027. That means solvency concerns are now off the table. Below lists the upcoming maturities for $VFC with the first one maturing in Dec 2024 and how they are able to pay down three thranches with the assumptions I listed.
This will follow with a strategic and culture shift towards expansion of the business instead of conservation all while maintaining a necessary level of financial discipline.

Vans’ classic styles are experiencing a resurgence since the last cycle in 2021. Fashion trends are fickle, and we can expect the Old Skool and Slip-ons to make a comeback after a three-year downcycle. I’ve attached a couple of links that highlights the resurgence Vans are cool again by GQ, Chequered Vans is the new Sambas by Vogue, Trainers that will give sambas serious competition.

KNU Skool is addressing the younger audience’s shift toward chunkier shoes. Vans, between 2022 and late 2023, didn’t have an answer to this trend, the trend of younger consumers gravitating toward baggier jeans paired with bold chunkier shoes (like New Balance 530s and Crocs). The KNU Skool is changing that. Foot Locker’s recent earnings call noted:
“We’re seeing encouraging trends out of the Vans brand, especially through their KNU Skool franchise. Next to that, we are excited for a strong boot season with Timberland this fall and holiday.” – Foot Locker

Foot Locker reiterated a strong boot season for Timberland. They’ve announced the “Iconic” campaign in September featuring Naomi Capmbell and others. Additionally, Timberland is trending strongly in Korean K-Pop, which has significant influence in East Asian fashion and will likely impact the largest consumer market in the world, China.

CEO has bought $2 million worth of shares: 1 million at $15.38, and another million at $13.20. The second purchase happened within the same quarter that the Supreme sale was disclosed.

Mid-Small caps offer a better relative valuation than the Nasdaq Tech index. As of August 30, $VFC is ranked number 14 in terms of portfolio weightage of the iShares Small Cap 600 UCITS ETF. The exclusion of $VFC from the S&P 500 in March 2024, and its subsequent inclusion in the S&P 600, sparked a sell-off in the stock. However, the diligent investor will see this as a tailwind, as markets start to turn risk-on into year-end, knowing the rate hiking cycle has ended.

Weak year-over-year comps for Q2 and Q3 2025: Vans sales were horrid for FY24 last year. They were particularly bad in Q3-Q4. With that said, this bad news will become a tailwind as it becomes low comps a year out. All the analysts will then all get excited when they see strong double digit headline growth again.
All of these improvements while VF Corp is trading at lows of $17.00. They will eventually achieve their financial targets to bring Net Debt /EBITDA back to 2.5x levels. For context, Net Debt as of Aug 2024 is 5.3B and post Supreme sale, this Net Debt will be shrunk close to 3.6 billion.
In 2019, VFC achieved $2.3 billion of EBITDA, driven by strong growth in Vans. And that was before The North Face had strong double digit revenue growth years throughout 2019-2024. It really only requires an EBITDA of roughly $1.4 billion (60% of 2019 EBITDA highs) to achieve the target of reducing its Net Debt / EBITDA ratio to 2.5x Now that The North Face is generating as much revenue as Vans in 2024, this target is definitely achievable simply by operating more efficiently, focusing on brand building and capitalizing on fashion-trend shifts.
What will truly prop up excitement for this stock and bring it up to >$50 a share are the untapped opportunities no one is even thinking about. Vans Apparel makes up ~20% of Vans sales, and surprise surprise, Sun Choe has strong experience in apparel. If Vans could come up with a streetwear product line that competes with Stussy/Thrasher, that’s another opportunity that will drive double digit growth. Brand relevance of Vans and Timberlands is also low in APAC so many opportunities there, a success story is TNF experiencing 35% YOY growth in APAC region. Read more on this here.
